Meet our Ambassador Marcio Andre!

Marcio André is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Fábio Andrade who is regarded as one of the top athletes of his generation in the sport. A great story of success through jiu jitsu, Marcio André almost succumbed to the grooming of criminality, but managed to overcome this through Andrade and his work with underprivileged kids. Today André  is the prime representative of the Família Bangu Jiu Jitsu, a small and humble affiliate academy of the Nova Uniao team that has brought to Jiu Jitsu a sizeable number of top of the line competitors during the 2010 decade.

  • IBJJF World Champion (2014 brown, 2013 & 2012 purple, 2011 blue)
  • IBJJF World Championship Runner-up (2016 black)
  • UAEJJF World Pro Champion (2016 black, 2014 brown, 2013 purple)
  • IBJJF World No-Gi Champion (2016 black, 2013 brown)

Marcio Andre was born in Bangu, a neighborhood in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the 19th of October, 1994. Marcio’s father was shot and killed when he was a two years old, lacking a father figure while growing up, Andre started hanging around criminals and outcasts from society. When he was 11 years old, jiu jitsu appeared in Marcio’s life through some friends who had started training just before him and who showed André some grappling positions, thus sparking in him the desire to train.

He joined the Nova Uniao Bangu academy where he met coach Fábio Andrade. Marcio remained under coach Andrade’s guidance in this small academy, training along side great competitors such as Kaue Damasceno, Isaque Bahiense, Iris Batista and many others.

Andrade became an immediate sensation as at the junior levels, winning the Brazilian Nationals and the Team Nationals in 2010 and 2011 respectively. The continuous good results at the top competitions of the IBJJF calendar caught the attention of the mainstream media of the sport, who started mentioning Marcio Andre as one of the top fighters of his generation, a reputation he continuously proved to be worthy of receiving.

In 2014, after winning another world title, Marcio Andre received his black belt while still on the mats by his instructor Fábio Andrande.

Marcio is the perfect role model for Live Jiu-Jitsu, a person who has inspired and continues to inspire BJJ competitors to pursue their goals and dreams despite of life circumstances , and most importantly SHOWING that it is possible to achieve them!
