Jose Aldo UFC 156 Charity Auction

Nova Uniao Black Belt and current UFC Featherweight Champion of the World, Jose Aldo, is continuing his efforts to give back to his community. With the success of his previous auctions and the proceeds gathered from Nova Uniao merchandise sales, new mats and kimonos were able to be purchased for the students in the community programs supported by the non-profit organization LIVE Jiu-Jitsu. Now, with his latest win over Frankie Edgar at the UFC 156, Aldo hopes to again raise funds that will further the development of these programs with the help of Nova Uniao USA President, Gustavo Dantas, who is responsible for the promotion of the program in the US and funds distribution to Brazil through Live Jiu-Jitsu, in which he is the co-founder.

What is Live Jiu-Jitsu?

Live Jiu-Jitsu is a non-profit organization which focuses on raising funds to support Jiu-Jitsu programs for the youth and young adults living in low-income and gang populated areas in Brazil known as “favelas”. It is within Live Jiu-Jitsu’s objective to be able to sponsor 2-3 athletes from 10 to 15 years old, every year to compete at the IBJJF Pan Kids or other tournaments in the U.S. Many of those living in these favelas will never get the chance to leave their cities, let alone the country, in order to travel or compete. Opportunities like the ones we would like to provide are essential in giving these young people hope and inspiration to lead a life of purpose.

Aldo will be auctioning off three autographed items on eBay. These items include:

Results for the 6th AZ Open Gi Drive

This past weekend Live Jiu-jitsu set up a booth at Gustavo Dantas’ 6th Arizona International Open. This was our first public outing, we wanted to raise awareness throughout the state about, who we are, what we do, and how people can help. Over the 2 day tournament we answered many questions and brought very welcomed attention to ourselves. We managed to raise 15 Gi’s ranging in all different sizes and over $100. Being our first public event, we weren’t expecting a huge flow of people, but people were consistently intrigued to hear about us. Throughout the rest of 2011 Live Jiu-Jitsu will be collecting Gi’s. We have a partnership with On The Mat Fight Shops (OTM) and whenever someone donates, On The Mat will send them a 15% discount coupon! If you are interested in donating please contact us. You can drop a Gi at any Nova Uniao Affiliated school. Thanks to all of donated!

One a side note: We were selling t-shirts like the one worn in the picture above. If you would like one, they are available at Arizona Combat Sports (GdJiujitsu). All proceeds go to furthering our cause.

Live Jiu-Jitsu’s Gi Drive!

We had another article published in GracieMag.

The 6th Arizona International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open tournament is pleased to announce that it will be joining the Arizona-based non-profit organization Live Jiu-Jitsu. This organization aims to help children and young adults begin their training in the sport by providing gi’s to those who could not otherwise afford them. Live Jiu-Jitsu is currently supporting community projects such as Morro Azul and Morro Santo Amaro, taught by Nova União Black Belts, Fabiano “Babu” Freitas (read more about Babu’s Tatame Legal project here) and Marlon Sandro, respectively. The non-profit organization also provide new mats for the students to practice at the Morro Azul Project.

Live Jiu-Jitsu is aiming to collect one hundred gi’s by the summer. They will be collecting gi’s on both Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 2:00 pm at the 6 th AZ Open. Additionally, On The Mat (OTM) Fight Shop has been gracious enough to assist Live Jiu-Jitsu in this gi-drive. They will be offering a 15% discount for any new OTM gi to those who donate their old one (good condition). A good reason to donate to a great cause just got better!

José Aldo holds auction to spread Jiu-Jitsu in needy neighborhoods

Following his second successful title defense in the WEC, José Aldo and our GMA Gustavo Dantas are holding another auction to raise funds for the Live Jiu-Jitsu organization.

The last time they held an auction, with items like the gloves he used in the fight with Urijah Faber, they were able to muster enough funds to purchase brand new mats for Master Fabiano “Babu” Freitas’s Jiu-Jitsu program in the Morro Azul community, a low-income housing neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro.

This time, the WEC champion is auctioning off, over Ebay, the banner from his last title defense, against Manny Gamburyan. The idea is to collect enough money to buy a new mat for another needy neighborhood, the Santo Amaro community where Sengoku champion and Nova União black belt Marlon Sandro has run run a project teaching Jiu-Jits for several years.

The aim of the Live Jiu-Jitsu organization, founded by Gustavo Dantas, is not just to take the gentle art to needy regions of Brazil, but the entire world.
