Higher Ground is a non-profit organization in Tucson Arizona with a mission of empowering one life at a time to reach, transform and elevate the community through love and building character. Higher Ground has an after school program at their facility as well as several programs deployed in the school system and community.
One of the program offerings that Higher Ground provides is Brazilian jiu jitsu (bjj). The benefits of for the participating youth are varied and include focus, confidence, and respect.
Live Jiu jitsu recently visited Higher Ground and their founder and CEO Jansen Azarias. Jansen explained the origin of Higher Ground, their significant growth, and the multitude of programs that they offer. Jansen also facilitated a visit to Hollinger K-8 school which is part of the Tucson Unified School District.
Hollinger K-8 has an innovative new trial program of brazilian jiu jitsu directly in the school. We interviewed principal Kamren Taravati as well as Danny Johnson, who is the In-School Interventionist, about the impact the program is having on the enrolled youth. We also spoke with Regional Superintendent Brian Lambert about his vision for growth within the district.
